Kayan da ake amfani da su wajen samar da methanol na iya zama iskar gas ta halitta, iskar gas ta coke oven, kwal, man da ya rage, naphtha, iskar wutsiya ta acetylene ko wasu iskar sharar da ke ɗauke da hydrogen da carbon monoxide. Tun daga shekarun 1950, iskar gas ta zama babban kayan da ake amfani da su wajen samar da methanol. A halin yanzu, sama da kashi 90% na masana'antun da ke duniya suna amfani da iskar gas ta halitta a matsayin kayan da ake amfani da su. Saboda yadda tsarin samar da methanol daga iskar gas yake da ɗan gajeren lokaci, jarin da ake zubawa bai yi yawa ba, farashin samarwa bai yi yawa ba, kuma fitar da sharar gida uku ya yi ƙasa. Ta hanyar matakai daban-daban, ana rage yawan amfani da makamashi a kowace tan na methanol daga 38 ~ 40 GJ zuwa 29 ~ 33 GJ.

Ana amfani da iskar gas ta halitta a matsayin kayan da aka ƙera, sannan a matse, a cire sulfur sannan a tsarkake don samar da syngas (wanda galibi ya ƙunshi H2 da CO2). Bayan ƙarin matsi, syngas ɗin yana shiga hasumiyar haɗa methanol don haɗa methanol a ƙarƙashin aikin mai kara kuzari. Bayan haɗa methanol mai ɗanyen mai, ta hanyar distillation kafin cire fusel, gyara don samun methanol da aka gama.
